Milk factory faces challenges - 20th January 2021 View All
This dairy factory, located in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, is run by businessman Ghami Mia. His company, Milko, provides dairy products, such as yoghurt, to a large number of towns in the area.
However, the region is unstable. Many areas are under Taliban control. Mia is forced to deal with the Taliban and the Afghan government. Both sides collect taxes from Milko. At times, the government also demands some of the company’s products.
Milko manufactures over 300 products, from flavoured milks to ice creams and keeps its own herd of 250 dairy cows. However, the company requires additional milk, which local farmers have been happy to provide. The payments offer farmers a reliable source of income.
Different groups have been fighting for over 40 years in Afghanistan. This has weakened the country and security is always an issue. As the conflict has recently worsened, Mia has become more concerned. Milko's future is uncertain but Mia hopes to stay open. He feels a responsibility to the farmers which the business helps to support.
Some are optimistic about the new discussions between the Taliban and the government. It is hoped an agreement will improve the situation and bring about a more secure future. View Less
