Dangerous dairy distribution - 20th January 2021 View All
The Milko production plant is a major supplier of dairy produce to towns in Kandahar province in war-torn southern Afghanistan. Founded by savvy entrepreneur, Ghami Mia, Milko operates despite the challenges posed by travelling through Taliban strongholds, which encircle some communities.
Forced to walk a tightrope between the Taliban and government representatives, this precarious situation impacts the daily running of Mia’s growing business. Both parties demand a slice of Milko’s fortune, levying so-called ‘taxes’, and Mia has little choice but to bear the costs. In lieu of hard cash, it’s not unheard of for government officials to demand payment in Milko’s own products.
Milko boasts well over 300 highly sought after products, ranging from flavoured milks to delectable ice creams. Demand is such that the company depends heavily on local livestock farmers, despite raising its own 250-strong dairy herd. Growing numbers have taken to owning cattle, having seen the boost that sales of milk provide to finances.
Rife with corruption after four decades ravaged by conflict, a recent upsurge in Taliban-government clashes has further exacerbated Afghanistan’s fragile situation. While Mia regards closure of the firm a last resort given his loyalty to the farmers who provide milk, it remains a possibility.
Imminent negotiations between the warring factions offer a glimmer of hope which may yet present Afghanistan with a path out of its predicament. View Less
