Captain Tom raises £30 million - 04/05/2020 View All
Retired army Captain Tom Moore has captured the imagination of the nation, raising tens of millions of pounds for UK health charities.
Captain Moore: "I'm Captain Moore. I'm walking for the NHS."
After receiving life-saving hospital care, the 99 year old decided on a fundraising attempt, walking 100 laps of his garden before he turned 100 at the end of April.
Setting an ambitious sponsorship target of £1,000 for his chosen good causes, Captain Tom’s children agreed to sponsor him £1 a lap.
But in the midst of the pandemic crisis, interest in his endeavour soon picked up and the contributions flooded in.
As the army veteran celebrated his century on 30th April, the total mounted to over £30 million and he was awarded the Army rank of honorary colonel, while a school hall housed his cards.
Among the staggering 125,000 birthday cards he received, he’ll treasure his personal card from the Queen most. View Less
