Delivery drone traffic jams

Tel Aviv's air space is buzzing with drones delivering sushi and beer. However, with the surge in enterprises tapping into the new delivery service transporting food and medicine, air traffic control has become a core concern to the budding sector's success.

This fleet of delivery drones was successful because of one software company, HighLander specialising in inter-drones communications for air traffic control. HighLander's Chief Executive Officer, Alon Abelson expounds on the significance of this development.

Alon Abelson: "To fly one drone is not an issue. You just give it a sterile area and that's it. We are talking about multi drones that actually communicate between themselves. They are not communicating between themselves because they come from different drone manufacturers, but still they are monitoring with our software and we can make sure they don't collide - landing safely and everything. Exactly like an air traffic controller."

All eyes are now on this new breakthrough, as thus far, all major drone manufacturers have specialised solely in their own products' technological ecosystem rather than connecting them with each other.

Head of drones at the Israel Innovation Authority, Daniella Partem expands on this.

Daniella Partem: "We're trying to create, using the system you see behind us, a managing system that will enable many drones flown by different companies in urban areas, flying together for many usages, such as medical delivery, such as security, such as food delivery."

Previously known as the world's top drone technology experts, Israel is pushing to recapture the number one spot, having been outshone by Turkey and Russia in military drone use. Israel's banking on the expertise of its air force veterans to charge ahead of the pack, providing drone traffic control services in civilian spaces. As such, it is the everyday pleasures like gelato which may be on the forefront of the next technological breakthrough.
