Beyoncé the Grammy sensations - 20th February 2023
The Grammys, the music industry's most prestigious awards, witnessed some historic wins and performances, but the highlight beyond a shadow of a doubt was pop icon Beyoncé winning her 32nd award, breaking the record for most Grammys won.
Beyoncé's chart topping album Renaissance received best dance/electronic album, shattering the record which had been set over two decades earlier by Hungarian-British conductor, George Solti. "I'm trying not to be too emotional" she admitted, accepting her gold plated trophy, "I'm trying just to receive this night."
She took to the microphone to thank her family, especially her late Uncle Johnny, who had created her outfits when she was just starting out. Renaissance was inspired by his links with the LGBTQ+ community and his death due to HIV.
Despite breaking records, Beyoncé was pipped at the post for album of the year, which was awarded to UK pop star Harry Styles. The former One Direction member's slick third album, Harry's House took the top prize. Choosing to downplay the triumph, Styles stated "On nights like tonight, it's important for us to remember that there's no such thing as best in music."
Sam Smith and Kim Petras' best duo/group performance and win was a historic achievement that blew everyone away. Smith gave Petras the floor for her speech as the first transgender woman to win in the category. She praised her mother for her love and support and that she always believed her, that she was a girl.
Lizzo bagging record of the year and Bad Bunny's sensational performance were further highlights. Surprising many, singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt's emotional ballad Just Like That beat favourites Beyoncé and Taylor Swift for song of the year.
The finale of the evening was a celebratory performance, honouring half a century of hip-hop with more than two dozen top artists including legends Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes and more belting out a 12-minute showcase of the genre's top show stopping tunes.
What a fabulous star studded occasion of records, surprises and celebrations for the music industry.
