Instagram changes Vietnam village - 9th February 2024 View All

A local industry and Instagram tourism have brought benefits to a small village in Vietnam. Quang Phu Cau, in the north, is now famous as 'the incense village', as it has numerous small businesses which create incense sticks. The brightly- coloured products are attracting photographers in search of a great picture.

Dang Thi Hoa's proud to be the third generation of incense makers in the family business.

Dang Thi Hoa: "I am proud of our family's traditional craft and I love my job. I also feel happy as our village has become more well known."

According to tradition, the incense sticks are either bright red or bright pink. However, due to the growing tourist interest, the colour range now includes yellow, blue and green as well.

Sarah's travelled from Belgium.

Sarah Vanmalderghim: "It's a perfect combination of the traditional craft that you can see here. And it's nice to take photos with all the colours. So it's wonderful."

Preparation for the Lunar New Year, or 'Tet' as it's known in Vietnam, is the most active period. Crowds visit temples to burn incense, or light them in a special altar at home, in memory of past relations.

Even at this time, the importance of tourism isn't forgotten. Businesses arrange for a member of staff to take care of the visitors. They help take guests around and find the best photo opportunities.

For the sum of $2, tourists can take as many photos as they wish, and the incense sticks are also on sale for just 50 cents a bunch. This industry is very beneficial for the local economy.

Catherine, from the Philippines, is excited to be here.

Catherine Caro: "I have never seen anything like this one. So in terms of experience, I think this is new for us. And then the place is very nice, very colourful, and it's, it's really an Instagram worthy place." View Less
