Harris makes history - 19th August 2020 View All
Kamala Harris has been named as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate to take on Republican incumbent Trump in the forthcoming US elections.
Of Jamaican and Indian descent, Harris is the first major party vice presidential candidate to be African American or Asian American.
Joe Biden: "And this morning all across the nation, little girls woke up, especially little black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities. But today, today just maybe they're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way as the stuff of president and vice presidents."
Being first is nothing new for Harris as she was the first African American, first woman, and first Asian American to hold office as California’s attorney general, and the first Indian American to serve as a US senator, being only the second African American woman to do so.
Harris previously announced her intent to run for the presidency itself, but she later retired from the race and has since given her blessing to Joe Biden's campaign.
Harris: "This is a moment of real consequence for America. Everything we care about, our economy, our health, our children, the kind of country we live in, it's all on the line."
Harris will have to wait 'til November 2020 to see if she can add another first to her list. View Less
