US mourns Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg

In Washington DC, a crowd of hundreds came together outside the United States Supreme Court to pay tribute to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The 87-year-old judge lost her battle with cancer on Friday.

Almost three decades ago, Ginsburg became only the second woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

A legal pioneer, she spent her time on the Supreme Court championing the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and immigrants.

Lorena Blanco: "We believe that RBG was a role model for all women. She stands up for everyone - supported women, supported the LGBTQ community, and cared about everyone's rights.”

No stranger to a fight, Ginsburg pursued a legal career at a time when there were few women in her field. Her battles to bring about equality for women in the 1970s were dramatised in the film "On The Basis Of Sex".

Kiley Boland: "She was my hero before I was born and I didn't know it for a long time. She's the reason that I can be a lawyer. She's the reason that women can't legally be discriminated against, so she means a lot to us."

A stalwart of the liberal bench, Ginsburg's death leaves a vacancy on the Supreme Court that President Trump is keen to fill with a right-leaning candidate. Liberal voters worry about the long-lasting impact this could have on legal policy and law making in the States. View Less
