More marriages on the rock - 4th December 2020 View All

Pandemic border regulations have taken their toll on international affairs of the heart, leaving some lovesick souls unable to unite. Desperately seeking solutions to this quarantine malady, couples are increasingly taking the plunge in the tiny Mediterranean territory of Gibraltar.

Flora Lam, founder of a wedding planning service in Gibraltar, which is renowned for its international nuptials, goes into particulars.

Lam: "They just desperate to be with each other because if they not married, they can't be, you know, travelling to each other's country to, to meet up."

Shattering plans for a Dublin wedding with his fiancée, Bruno Miani from Brazil decided to take a leaf out of his musical hero’s register book.

Miani: "John Lennon got married with Yoko Ono here. And it was like, for us, it was like – for me especially because I’m a big, big Beatles fan – and I decided, OK this is going to be, yeah, a nice place for us to be."

Sarah Ann was seeking a neutral location.

Sarah Ann: "Well, both myself and my partner, we're from England and Ireland, so we didn't want to choose either of them countries."

As Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo is gratified to be providing services to star crossed lovers in these uncharted times.

Picardo: "Whether you’re a James Bond, or a Beatle, or a person who is needing to ensure that they can make that bond of love official and legal, Gibraltar’s the place for you." View Less
