Global couples wed in Gibraltar - 4th December 2020 View All

Throwing wedding plans into chaos worldwide, the pandemic has far-reaching consequences for international couples.

However, the tiny territory of Gibraltar is coming to the aid of long distance partners separated by Covid. The Mediterranean port has a history of conducting weddings for international couples.

One expert in wedding planning in Gibraltar, Flora Lam, offers an insight.

Lam: "They just desperate to be with each other because if they not married, they can't be, you know, travelling to each other's country to, to meet up."

When lockdown ended Brazilian Bruno Miani’s dreams of marrying his fiancée in Dublin, he took inspiration from one of his idols.

Miani: "John Lennon got married with Yoko Ono here. And it was like, for us, it was like – for me especially because I’m a big, big Beatles fan – and I decided, OK this is going to be, yeah, a nice place for us to be."

Then there’s Sarah Ann’s story.

Sarah Ann: "Well, both myself and my partner, we're from England and Ireland, so we didn't want to choose either of them countries."

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, feels privileged to be performing this service uniting distant lovers.

Picardo: "Whether you’re a James Bond, or a Beatle, or a person who is needing to ensure that they can make that bond of love official and legal, Gibraltar’s the place for you." View Less
