World mourns Maradona - 2nd December 2020 View All
The world of football fell into mourning at the death of Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona following a heart attack at the age of 60.
In many people's eyes, Maradona was the greatest player of all time, and his virtuoso performances as Argentina’s captain in the 1986 World Cup earned his country the prize. His famous 'Diegoal' against England later topped FIFA's poll for goal of the century.
Never without the number 10 emblazoned on his back, Maradona also led Barcelona and Napoli to championship victories, but his battles with injury and drug abuse resulted in him departing both clubs mired in controversy.
Regardless, Maradona attained god-like status in the hearts of many Argentinians. His missteps served only to prove the footballing legend's humanity.
President Alberto Fernandez declared three days of mourning as the grief stricken nation comes to terms with the loss of a man regarded by many as a national hero. In Buenos Aires, crowds paid their respects at the Diego Maradona Stadium, the Obelisk landmark and the Boca Juniors Stadium, the crucible for his incredible career.
At 10pm on the day news broke of his death the Argentinian capital erupted with a cacophony of cheers, horns and sirens in a heartfelt tribute to the man in the number 10 shirt. View Less
