Holes found near Stonehenge - 29th June 2020
Historians have found a group of deep holes in the UK. The holes were made thousands of years ago.
Over 4000 years ago, people built circles with stone or wood. These circles were important for people's religion. People then only had simple tools. The circles were difficult to build.
Tourists often visit these historic circles. Stonehenge is the most famous stone circle in England. Many of its stones are still complete.
Now, historians have discovered a circle of large holes close to Stonehenge. Another stone circle, Durrington Walls, is in the centre of the holes. Experts think the holes guided people to Durrington Walls.
The discovery was made by academics from different universities. They used new technology to find them.
The area is studied a lot, so they were surprised to find the holes. The academics thought they were natural at first. However, new technological research changed their minds.
Experts say the discovery changes our ideas about ancient societies. They want to discover the purpose of the holes, so they will continue studying them.
