Kamala Harris - 19th August 2020
Kamala Harris wants to be the next vice president of the USA. Joe Biden wants to be the next president. They are from the Democratic party. Trump is from the Republican party.
Harris's family is Jamaican and Indian. She could be the first woman to be vice president. And the first black person and the first Indian American to be vice president.
Joe Biden: "And this morning all across the nation, little girls woke up, especially little black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities. But today, today just maybe they're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way as the stuff of president and vice presidents."
Harris is a lawyer. She was California’s top lawyer. She was the first woman to have this job. Now she is also a politician. She is the first Indian-American in the US Senate.
In 2019, Harris wanted to become president. She wanted to be the Democrats’ choice for president. She didn’t get enough Democrat votes. In December 2019, she changed her plans. Now, she wants Joe Biden to be president.
Harris: “This is a moment of real consequence for America. Everything we care about, our economy, our health, our children, the kind of country we live in, it's all on the line.”
The US elections are in November 2020.
