Unknown times for Brexit Britain - 6th January 2021
The UK and Europe entered a new relationship at New Year 2021. Midnight, Central European Time marked the end of the UK’s transition out of the EU.
A UK referendum on EU membership had been held in June 2016. The result led to negotiations on the UK’s exit, or ‘Brexit’.
These negotiations were extremely complex, especially around free movement and trade. They missed many deadlines. However, an agreement was reached on Christmas Eve which avoids tariffs on products entering the EU.
Customs checks are being introduced at ports and airports. These have raised costs for businesses and will create delays at borders. However, the ports were quiet on New Year’s Day and trucks didn’t experience serious delays.
The UK population is still divided over Brexit. Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed it offers the UK “opportunities unknown” in modern times.
British citizens now face limits on how long they can stay in the EU, including at their holiday homes. Travel with pets has also been restricted. Meanwhile, EU visitors to Britain can expect delays at borders.
The British overseas territory of Gibraltar, which borders Spain, caused difficulties. A last minute deal sees it included in the EU’s single travel area.
As businesses return to work after the holidays, they will measure the outcomes of Brexit for Britain.
