City escapes dragon danger - 15th June 2022
St George has once again been called upon to slay the dragon in the Belgian town of Mons. The festival features on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which recognises it as "a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity".
Known as the Ducasse de Mons – or the 'Doudou' to locals – it's a weekend of activities culminating with St George battling the dragon.
Although a seemingly chaotic encounter, the battle's choreographed with military precision. St George and the dragon face down against each other for 30 minutes, with the dragon's body and tail kept aloft by 11 'white men' and 8 'leaf men'. Meanwhile, 12 'Chin-chins' protect St George from 11 menacing devils.
The roles are all played by Mons locals from different professional backgrounds. They spend the year rehearsing the event to ensure it's true to its traditions, which date back to the 15th century. Taking part's highly prized, with many waiting years to be chosen.
The spectators aren't to be left out, taking on characters in the battle. They surge forwards to grab the dragon's mane and tail.
Of course, St George emerges victorious, defeating the dragon with his lance, sabre and finally a pistol shot.
A feeling of reconciliation flows through Mons and, as the dragon's slain, the people chant "and the people of Mons will not perish!"
