A decisive win in a divided country - 11th November 2020
Joe Biden has been declared President Elect of the United States. Although votes continue to be counted, news network poll analysts called the result on Saturday, as Biden had won Pennsylvania. This pushed Biden up to 273 electoral college votes and over the 270 needed to secure victory.
Across the country, Americans took to the streets in celebration of the result. The President Elect addressed a car rally in Wilmington, Delaware, with a message of unity.
Joe Biden: "I'm a proud Democrat. But I will govern as an American president. I’ll work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did."
Biden polled over 75 million votes, more than any presidential candidate in history. Vice President Elect, Kamala Harris, scores a number of firsts. She becomes the first woman, and first Black woman, first South Asian American and the first daughter of immigrants to hold such high office.
Kamala Harris: "And so, I am thinking about her and about the generations of women, Black women, Asian, White, Latina, Native American women who throughout our nation's history have paved the way for this moment tonight."
President Trump is contesting the results, filing lawsuits in several states claiming electoral fraud but without offering evidence to prove it.
