New island republic - 8th December 2021
The Caribbean island of Barbados has become a republic. Barbados has been an independent country since 1966. But now it has replaced the Queen of England with a president.
The new Barbadian president, Dame Sandra Mason, spoke about the country's future.
Dame Sandra Mason: "Vessel Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage. May she weather all storms and land our country and citizens safely on the horizons and shores which are ahead of us."
Prince Charles congratulated Barbados on its new republic and past success.
Prince Charles: "The creation of this republic offers a new beginning. But it also marks a point on a continuum. A milestone on the long road you have not only travelled, but which you have built."
Members of parliament have promised to protect the republic. Mia Amor Mottley, the Barbadian prime minister, knows the change will be difficult. People must move in the same direction.
Mia Amor Mottley: "396 years of a system of government is not two years. And it is with that in mind that I am conscious that we have a responsibility as of December 1st, tomorrow, to ensure that our nation moves as one."
Barbados will celebrate every 1st December as Independence Day.
Superstar Rihanna is Barbados's most famous child. She was given the country's National Hero award. Rihanna was delighted.
Rihanna: "I have travelled the world and received several awards and recognitions, but nothing, nothing compares to being recognized in the soil that you grew in."
Mottley hopes Rihanna's example will give young Barbadians confidence. They are free to follow their dreams.
