Billie Eilish wins big at the Grammys - 3rd February 2020
Billie Eilish won five major prizes at the 2020 Grammy music awards. She received the top place in categories including Best New Artist and Song of the Year.
At the age of 18, Eilish is the youngest singer ever to win the award for Album of the Year with ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’. She recorded the album at her L.A. home with her brother Finneas O’Connell, who also won Producer of the Year for his work on his sister’s album.
Eilish is the first pop star to win the four major categories since 1981. Everyone wants to win Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Album of the Year, and Eilish did just that.
The young celebrity is clearly humble about her success, explaining that she doesn’t think of herself as a famous pop star. She joked, "I feel like I'm not supposed to be here, I feel like they accidentally let in a fan!"
However, her fame is deserved as she has worked hard to write original pop music. She writes dark lyrics and creates experimental rhythms that are proving very popular. Her new approach has attracted worldwide fans and boosted her music up the downloads list.
Off the stage, the audience suffered some cases of mistaken identity during the show. ‘Seat fillers’ are people used to sit in empty seats at awards ceremonies. One businessman who was acting as a seat filler was mistaken for Eilish’s grandfather as he jumped up when her name was announced.
