New rules for Venice visitors - 5th February 2024
Venice has new rules for visitors. From June, tourist groups can have a maximum of 25 people. And tours cannot use microphones and speakers. These rules are for the city centre and other islands.
49,000 people live in Venice. But Venice often has more tourists than this. It’s difficult for local people to find apartments too. The city has more beds for tourists.
The number of visitors is a problem for Venice. They make the city busy, noisy and dirty.
Large numbers of tourists bring other problems too. They can change a city’s identity. And they can be bad for old buildings. UNESCO is worried about old buildings in Venice.
But new rules are helping. From 2021, large cruise ships can’t stop in Venice. And from 2025, day visitors will pay to enter Venice. The Venice Access Tax costs 5 euros.
