Robot eyes tested in sheep - 14th March 2022
In Australia, scientists are excited. They tested an electronic eye in some sheep. The new eye could help blind people to see. Its name is "Phoenix 99".
Each sheep had the eye for three months. Scientists put it behind the sheep's retina. The retina's at the back of a normal eye. Healthy retina cells respond to light. Phoenix 99 finds the healthy cells in the retina. It sends messages to the brain from these cells.
The electronic eye worked well for the sheep. Now, scientists will test Phoenix 99 in people. This is good news. There are over two billion blind or partly blind people.
The eye technology's very new. But it's changing fast. At the moment, cost is the problem, says Dr Hilal-Campo, a US eye doctor. The eye's very expensive, so it's only available to a few people. But she's sure science will soon find answers.
