Dream comes true for Raducanu - 20th September 2021
Young tennis star Emma Raducanu has beaten Canadian player Leylah Fernandez to win the US Open. This brings an end to Britain's wait for 44 years, as the last British woman to win a major tennis trophy was Virginia Wade, in 1977, at Wimbledon.
And Wade was one of the excited spectators, in the packed stadium in New York, watching the incredible match between the two young women. Raducanu, 18, played skilfully against the other talented teenager, Fernandez. Raducanu beat her opponent in two sets: 6-4 and 6-3.
Immediately after winning, she fell to the ground in relief. Then, after hugging her opponent, Raducanu joined her team to celebrate.
The British star’s tennis journey started at a young age. She was born in Canada to Chinese and Romanian parents and they moved to Britain when she was two. She grew up in London and Raducanu was five years old when she first played tennis. At seven, she was competing in local and regional competitions.
Even a few weeks ago, the young British tennis star was unknown to most people. She had previously entered only one major tennis competition, and she joined the US Open as an outsider.
But now, it's likely that Raducanu will be a big name in tennis for years to come.
