New comet comes near Earth - 10th August 2020
There is a new comet in the sky. A comet is frozen gas and rock. It gets hot near the sun and the gas burns. The new comet’s name is Comet Neowise.
The comet was near Earth in July. People saw it all over the world. It was 103 million kilometres away. You could see it low in the sky. It looked different from the stars. Comets have a ‘tail’ behind them. This comet’s tail pointed up.
You could see the comet from the International Space Station too. You could see the tail very well from the space station. The comet gets its name from a machine at NASA. The NEOWISE machine found the comet in March 2020.
The comet came from far out in the solar system. At the end of July, it moved away from Earth. It started travelling far out into the solar system again. It won’t come back for 6,800 years.
