Seesaws win prize - 1st February 2021

Seesaws are usually found in children's playgrounds. Children play on them. But in 2020, special pink seesaws were put on the US-Mexico border. These seesaws have won the Design of the Year award.

The seesaws were placed between the US and Mexico, through the border wall. One half of each seesaw was in Mexico. The other half was in America. Mexicans and Americans could have fun together.

The seesaws were only on the border for about 20 minutes. But people shared videos of them on the internet.

Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello are two university professors. They designed the seesaws. They had the idea for the seesaws 10 years ago. They wanted to show that Mexico and the US are connected.

The Design of the Year award is organised by London’s Design Museum. It gives prizes for great designs in fashion, food, transport and more. Tim Marlow is the head of the museum. He said the seesaws created "human connection".
