Scientists discover new island - 13th September 2021
In July, scientists found a new island. But, the island doesn't have a name. It is very near the North Pole. It is only 30 by 60 metres and it is close to Greenland. Denmark owns Greenland.
The scientists came from Denmark. They wanted to visit Oodaaq Island. They were on a science trip. The six scientists went by helicopter. But maps for Greenland aren't very good. It was hard to find Oodaaq Island. But, after they arrived they saw their mistake. They didn't land on Oodaaq. They landed in a new place. The new island was 800 metres north of Oodaaq.
They now know that this is the world's most northern island. They want to give it a name. But they are worried. The island might have a short life. It is only about three metres above the sea.
