Sign language for climate change - 2nd October 2023

British Sign Language (BSL) now has 200 new signs. These signs are about climate change. Deaf students can now learn about the topic easily.

Before, BSL users had to spell difficult science words. There were no signs for them. But now, these new signs make it easy for deaf scientists. They can speak at science meetings. Dr Audrey Cameron is a deaf scientist. She worked in science for 11 years. But she couldn't talk to others at meetings.

From 2007, the Royal Society added 7,000 signs to BSL. They want to add 200 more about energy and climate change. A school in Glasgow is teaching science lessons to deaf students. They're learning about climate change. They're using the new signs. The signs are clear and easy to understand.

Jeremy Sanders works for the Royal Society. He wants the new signs to help deaf scientists share their ideas with the world.
