Amazon bins products - 12th July 2021

Amazon is destroying millions of items. Every year, new products get thrown away.

The UK’s ITV News showed new items ready to be destroyed. These included technology products like new smart TVs, laptops, drones, headphones and computer drives. There were also hairdryers, books and thousands of face masks in boxes.

No one had bought these products. They were taking up space in the warehouse. Amazon could give these items to charity. But it chooses to destroy them.

An ex-employee told reporters that they destroyed 130,000 items every week.

Amazon’s way of doing business may cause problems for the environment. Many sellers keep their products at Amazon. If the products are not bought, it costs more to store them. This creates a problem. It’s cheaper to throw the products away than to keep them at Amazon for longer.

Greenpeace is an organization that fights for a greener world. Greenpeace member Sam Chetan-Welsh talked about the situation. He is shocked to see what Amazon is doing.

He said that if Amazon continues, things will get worse for the environment. He wants the government to make new laws to stop Amazon's actions.
