Long live Bobi - 13th March 2023
Recently, a 23 year old chihuahua received the Guinness World Record for the oldest dog alive. Then, two weeks later, an even older dog was found. This older dog, who’s called Bobi, lives in a small village in Portugal. Bobi's 30 years old and he's the oldest dog that anyone knows about.
The usual life for a dog like Bobi is 12 to 14 years. But Bobi’s lived for nearly 20 years longer than that. Bobi lives a healthy life. And he’s only ever had one problem with his health, which was in 2018.
Bobi's allowed to walk around the village freely. His owner, Leonel Costa, feeds him “human food” that doesn't have spices in it. Costa thinks this is why Bobi's so healthy. He says that the love and care that Bobi gets has been important too.
The government in Portugal has information about all the pets in the country. Bobi's file shows that he was born on 11th May, 1992.
Before Bobi, the oldest dog that anyone knew about was an Australian farm dog. Bluey lived for 29 years, from 1910 to 1939.
Bobi continues to live a much longer life than most dogs. We hope that this old dog has many more birthdays!
