Women make history at Grammys - 22nd March 2021

Superstar singers Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have made history at this year's Grammy awards.

Beyoncé took home her 28th Grammy. This makes her the most successful female artist in the history of the awards.

"I am so honoured, I'm so excited," she told the socially distanced crowd at the awards show.

Taylor Swift became the first female artist to win the Album of the Year award three times. The star was rewarded for her album 'Folklore'. Only three other artists have three Album of the Year Grammys: Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

Beyoncé earned Best R&B Performance for 'Black Parade'. The song celebrates Black power. It was released last year on Juneteenth, which is a holiday celebrating when slaves were freed in the US.

The song came at a time of protest in America. After the death of George Floyd, nationwide demonstrations took place in support of Black Lives Matter. The 46 year old died when he was being arrested by police.

As she collected the award, Beyoncé explained her reasons for recording 'Black Parade'.

"It's been such a difficult time," she said. "I wanted to uplift, encourage, celebrate all of the beautiful Black queens and kings that continue to inspire me and inspire the world."
