UNESCO World Heritage Sites - 9th August 2021
A city in England was removed from the World Heritage List. This is a list of important places in the world. The World Heritage Committee also added a place in Spain to the list.
The committee is part of UNESCO. They were checking 255 places on the list. The Taj Mahal in India is on the list because of its beauty. Some places are important for the Earth's history – for example, the Grand Canyon in North America.
The city of Liverpool was on the list for 17 years. It had a historic area by the water. The committee disliked the new, modern building projects in the city. This is because these buildings are changing Liverpool too much. It’s now removed the city from the list.
But the committee has added an area of Madrid to the list. It’s called Paseo del Prado. This large road, next to the city's Retiro Park, has a long history. Many cultural places like the Plaza de Cibeles and the Prado Museum are located on this street.
The Spanish government is pleased with the committee's decision.
