Pandemic makes people stop smoking - 27th July 2020
Lots of people are stopping smoking. They are worried about Covid-19. The charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) spoke to lots of people. A million people in the UK stopped smoking in the Covid pandemic.
The charity spoke to 10,000 people. They asked about people’s smoking habits. 7.6% of smokers stopped. Half of them were worried about Covid. Some people couldn’t buy cigarettes. Other people only smoked with friends.
A lot of smokers with Covid-19 needed to go to hospital. Health information from the US is worrying. When 1 non-smoker died of Covid, 1.8 smokers died.
Some people think smoking can stop Covid. They say nicotine stops the virus in the body. Scientists say this is wrong. They say smoking is very bad for your health. It helps Covid enter the body.
