Royal resignation shock - 15th January 2024

After 52 years leading Denmark, Queen Margrethe II – the world’s only ruling queen – has given up her throne. She’s handed the crown to her son, Frederik X. Queen Margrethe passed on the responsibility on the anniversary of her first day as queen 52 years earlier.

Margrethe announced her decision during her New Year’s speech. 82 year old Queen Margrethe had been Europe’s oldest living monarch since the death of Elizabeth II. However, after back surgery last year, the queen decided “to leave the responsibility to the next generation".

Her decision surprised the Danish public. Margrethe’s popular for her vibrant clothes and skill in languages. She also loves skiing and has served as a lieutenant in the Danish air force. Except for a few security guards, she walks the streets of Copenhagen like any regular citizen.

The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, thanked Queen Margrethe for her service. She said that throughout her reign she had “put words and feelings into who we are as a people and as a nation."

The new king is like his mother in many ways. Although he was known as the party prince in the 90s, Frederik X has become more mature after years of military service. His passions, which include cross country skiing and environmental activism, have increased his popularity with the public.

As king, Frederik’s keen for his family to continue living their normal lives. Speaking about how he plans to rule, he said "I don’t want to lock myself in a fortress. I want to be myself, a human being."
