Plastic found in clouds

Scientists have discovered microplastics in clouds. These tiny plastic polymers could be changing the climate. Research in Japan found 9 different types of microplastic in clouds above Mount Fuji.

We already knew that there are microplastics in the oceans. They're also found in volcanic rocks and in our bodies. But this is the first time that scientists have identified plastic air pollution.

Microplastics are pieces of plastic that are smaller than 5 millimetres. The scientists counted between 6.7 and 13.9 pieces of microplastic per litre of cloud water.

Climate change could become worse because of plastics in clouds. Sunlight breaks down the plastic, which produces greenhouse gases. It also changes microplastics into water-loving materials. This means they collect water and help to create clouds.

Microplastics fall in rain and pollute our land and water. When animals and people eat and drink, they can enter our bodies. They’ve been found in people’s hearts, brains and blood.

The health problems from microplastics are unknown. Some research has linked them to increased stress. They may also increase some cancers.

Plastics can be very useful, but scientists now have a warning. We need to produce less and reduce plastic air pollution.
