Glasgow now a city for women - 12th December 2022
The city of Glasgow, in Scotland, has decided to become the UK's first "feminist" city.
In the past, town planners were men, which means places are usually designed for men's needs.
Glasgow council says it now wants to put women at the centre of planning. They also want to include minority groups, like people of colour and wheelchair users.
Holly Bruce is a Green party member. She brought the idea to the Glasgow council. And the council members voted for it.
So, what exactly is a feminist city? The council isn't sure yet. But they plan to ask local people about possible changes in the city.
One suggestion is to build more street lights in parks. This will make women and minority groups feel safer. At the same time, the environment is important. That means parks should also be protected.
A feminist city is a place you can walk around safely, but also comfortably. Wider pavements are needed for babies and wheelchairs. Many people don't drive for financial reasons and it's necessary to put walkers first. Green spaces and bicycle paths are also very important.
As councillor Bruce said, "These factors aren't only important for women." They're needed to create "a healthier, more liveable city for all".
