New museum has fishy following - 4th September 2020

Tokyo, Japan is now home to the first permanent Art Aquarium.

The Art Aquarium began life as a summer exhibition in 2007 and visitors have flocked to the annual spectacle ever since.

Now a year round museum, it features 30,000 goldfish displayed in specially designed tanks lit by moving projections and numerous colours.

The exhibits, which will change with the seasons, showcase some rare goldfish alongside more familiar varieties. Their custom made tanks stand as sculptures in the space.

Directed by artist Hidetomo Kimura, Art Aquarium is grounded in his perception of fish as live artworks which he believes are overlooked in Japanese art. The Art Aquarium casts a new light on these creatures’ beauty.
