British teen Emma Raducanu wins US Open - B1

Emma Raducanu wins US Open Tennis - 20th September 2021

Emma Raducanu has won the women's singles competition at the US Open at the age of 18. This ends a 44 year wait for Britain. The last major tennis win for women was at Wimbledon in 1977 with Virginia Wade.

Wade was there to watch the fantastic final, in the crowded New York stadium. Raducanu was playing against another teenager, Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Both players showed great talent, but Raducanu won in two sets of 6-4 and 6-3. At the end, she threw herself on the ground for a few seconds. She was full of happiness.

The two teenagers hugged and then Raducanu went to celebrate with her team.

The young star's tennis journey started when she was young. Raducanu was born in Canada to a Chinese mother and Romanian father. She began playing at five. She was competing in local competitions when she was only seven.

Raducanu started the competition as an unknown player. She had played in just one other important competition. That was just two months ago.

Raducanu had a small chance of getting into this US Open. She had practically zero chance of winning it. But she did, and now the young woman is known across the whole world.
