Lake becomes pink in Hawaii - 4th Dec 2023

This Barbie pink lake is in Hawaii. The lake's in a park. But it isn't usually pink.

It looks pretty. But park keepers at Keālia Park don't want visitors near it. They want pets to stay away too. It isn't safe.

The problem is the weather. These days, Hawaii gets little rain. There's no water going into the lake. The amount of salt is high. It's too high. The pink colour comes from bacteria. 'Halobacteria' love salty water. They're growing there.

The rainfall problem costs Hawaii millions of dollars. In the USA, dry weather is bad for farmers. It's easy for fires to start too.

The park is a nature reserve. It's a special place. Usually, visitors come to see the birds. Now, they're coming to see the pink water.

Lovers of the colour pink are lucky. Hawaii predicts more and more hot weather.
