Rashmi Sahjiwala is 59. She is working for herself. Many women are making their homes a 'cloud kitchen'. The gig economy gives women in India new chances. Cheap mobile data makes it easy to work.
Curryful, Homefoodi and Zomato are food apps. They use the women’s skills. The women cook meals in their homes. Busy young people buy the food. They don’t have time to cook.
In India, many traditional families don’t want women to work. The apps help to make it possible.
Rashmi Sahjiwala, ‘cloud kitchen’ chef: “It is good for women because India is a very conservative country and still people, the women, cannot go easily outside and work. So, this kind of platform gives them a chance to work at home, look after the family, look after her dreams, what she wants to do, and she can have her own, she can earn money with that.”
Some app businesses give women training. They learn how to run a business. They teach the women how to make weekly menus and save money. Rashmi now makes $200 a month. There is a big future for 'cloud kitchens'.
