Kobe Bryant fatal helicopter crash - 29 January 2020
The famous NBA basketball player Kobe Bryant died on Sunday. He was killed in a helicopter crash in foggy weather. The helicopter crashed and caught fire in a Los Angeles suburb. All eight passengers and the pilot died. Bryant's 13 year old daughter, Gianna, was also in the helicopter.
Bryant was 41 years old and a very successful athlete. He played basketball for 20 years and spent his whole career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won five NBA championships and two Olympic gold medals.
Kobe Bryant also won an Oscar in 2018. It was for his animated short film called 'Dear Basketball'. The film was about his love of basketball.
Bryant's death has shocked the world. Stars and celebrities have said the news is hard to believe.
Bryant's fans are also very upset by his death. Some fans met together near the site of the crash.
Daniel Luchy, local resident: "There was plumes of smoke going up and you could see that there were already emergency personnel at the crash scene."
Chris Martin, local resident: "So I'm a pilot and I was scheduled to fly this morning and the conditions were 400 feet overcast, a half-mile visibility, mist and fog. It wasn't a condition that you'd want to fly in."
