A historic win and call for unity - 11th November 2020
Joe Biden has become the US President Elect. The announcement came on Saturday after Biden took the lead in Pennsylvania, which provided 20 ‘electoral college’ votes. This saw his total climb to 273 and cross the 270 vote finish line, with more results still to come.
Americans poured onto the streets all over the country to celebrate. President Elect Biden delivered a speech at a rally in Wilmington, Delaware. He promised to unite people.
Joe Biden: "I'm a proud Democrat. But I will govern as an American president. I’ll work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did."
Biden’s gained over 75 million votes, the highest presidential total ever. Alongside this, Kamala Harris enters history as the first woman, Black woman, South Asian American to serve as Vice President. She’s also the first to be a child of immigrants.
Kamala Harris: "And so, I am thinking about her and about the generations of women, Black women, Asian, White, Latina, Native American women who throughout our nation's history have paved the way for this moment tonight."
President Trump won’t accept his defeat. His lawyers are working in several states, trying to invalidate millions of votes.
