Beatboxing for Buddha - 14th August 2020
Yogetou Akasaka, a beatboxing monk from Japan, is giving Buddhism a remix.
During the Coronavirus lockdown, his work overseeing funerals and memorial services dried up.
Having taken up beatboxing 15 years ago, he decided to combine this sound with religious chants.
His tunes have been viewed almost a million times on YouTube, leading to a new realisation for the musical monk.
Akasaka: “I just realised that I can just spread my stuff not only in Japan, but to, like, in the world."
Having discovered Buddhism at the relatively late age of 30, Akasaka hopes his music will encourage more young people to take a closer look at the religion.
Akasaka: “So, maybe if my music attracts younger people, it will be a good opportunity for them to know about the Buddhism."
