Beatboxing Buddhist monk - B1+

Buddhist beatboxing - 14th August 2020

Yogetou Akasaka is a Buddhist monk from Japan who also beatboxes.

He normally organises funerals and memorial services, but during the Coronavirus lockdown most of this work stopped.

He decided to get creative and mix Buddhist chants with beatboxing, which he took up 15 years ago.

His "Heart Sutra Looping remix" has been viewed on YouTube almost a million times.

This success has made Akasaka realise something.

Akasaka: “I just realised that I can just spread my stuff not only in Japan, but to, like, in the world."

Akasaka came to Buddhism fairly late at the age of 30. He hopes that his music will bring Buddhism to a younger audience.

Akasaka: “So, maybe if my music attracts younger people, it will be a good opportunity for them to know about the Buddhism."
