'RBG' mourned by the US - 23rd September 2020

Following the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to cancer on Friday, hundreds joined a vigil outside the United States Supreme Court in Washington DC at the weekend to honour and mourn the trailblazing judge.

Only the second female judge on the Supreme Court, Ginsburg served for nearly three decades, during which time she became known as an indefatigable advocate for LGTBQ and immigrant rights.

Lorena Blanco: "We believe that RBG was a role model for all women. She stands up for everyone - supported women, supported the LGBTQ community, and cared about everyone's rights.”

Ginsburg overcame adversity by starting her law career at a time when female lawyers were few and far between. In the 1970s, she battled gender discrimination in a series of legal struggles that were later immortalised in the film "On The Basis Of Sex".

Kiley Boland: "She was my hero before I was born and I didn't know it for a long time. She's the reason that I can be a lawyer. She's the reason that women can't legally be discriminated against, so she means a lot to us."

President Trump will hope to supplant the left-leaning Ginsburg with a far more conservative candidate. Liberals and moderates fear that should Trump have his way, the ideological balance of the Supreme Court could be skewed for a generation.
