Locusts swarm over Kenya - A2


These insects are locusts. They fly in large groups. They are moving across Kenya. The locusts are eating the food in the fields. They ate lots of food in Somalia and Ethiopia.

Locusts are similar to grasshoppers. They fly in groups. A group has up to 80 million locusts. They can fly 130 kilometres a day.

Locusts eat people's food. Lots of people get hungry. 'Food security' is a big problem in the area.

This year, the locusts in East Africa are very bad.

Police are trying to stop the insects.

The Kenyan Government is using planes. They are spraying the locusts. The spray kills the locusts.

70,000 hectares in Ethiopia and Somalia have locusts. People are very worried. There are locusts in Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia and Yemen too.
