Covid-cancelled weddings head to Gibraltar - B1

International weddings in Gibraltar - 4th December 2020

Covid has cancelled wedding plans for many couples. If couples aren't married, pandemic travel rules can stop them being together. But there is a sunny, Mediterranean solution: a wedding in Gibraltar.

Flora Lam owns a wedding planning business. She explains:

Lam: "They just desperate to be with each other because if they not married, they can't be, you know, travelling to each other's country to, to meet up.""

Brazilian Bruno Miani had hoped to marry his girlfriend in Dublin. Covid meant government offices were closed. Instead, they got married like celebrities.

Miani: "John Lennon got married with Yoko Ono here. And it was like, for us, it was like – for me especially because I’m a big, big Beatles fan – and I decided, OK this is going to be, yeah, a nice place for us to be."

Sarah Ann has arrived from Spain.

Sarah Ann: "Well, both myself and my partner, we're from England and Ireland, so we didn't want to choose either of them countries."

Fabian Picardo is Gibraltar's wedding official. He’s pleased that Gibraltar is able to help couples like this.

Picardo: "Whether you’re a James Bond, or a Beatle, or a person who is needing to ensure that they can make that bond of love official and legal, Gibraltar’s the place for you."
