Pop royalty wins family feud - 6th October 2021
A bitter legal battle between American pop princess Britney Spears and her father has finally concluded.
A Los Angeles judge removed Jamie Spears as his daughter's conservator.
Britney's lawyer Mathew S Rosengart addressed crowds of Britney fans outside the court.
Mathew S Rosengart: "I'm so pleased and proud to say Jamie Spears is no longer a conservator."
The pop star's father has been controlling her life for the last 13 years. His role as guardian or conservator was put in place following Britney suffering a mental health breakdown.
It meant that her father controlled not only her finances and her business affairs but every aspect of her life. Britney fans known as the B-army, concerned about her predicament have been campaigning to set Britney free and were emotional at the news of Mr Spears removal.
Nefertara Ozella: "My first reaction? I was overjoyed, I was so happy for Britney, this is the beginning for her of getting her life back."
James Edward: "It was just a beautiful feeling to hear that be announced and just - the joy, the relief and just the feeling that came across everyone that's here today. It made it worth coming out for."
Two recently released documentaries have raised further questions about the abusive nature of Mr Spears' conservatorship, a point addressed by her lawyer. These revelations are now being investigated.
Mathew S Rosengart: "Putting a listening device under Britney Spears' bed in her bedroom, something that's very, very troubling. That's something that it is for law enforcement and not myself to make the ultimate conclusion on."
Britney's case has brought the issue of conservatorships into the public eye and the B-army are determined to make heard the voices of others who have been badly affected.
Melanie Mandarano: "It's not over even, even when she's free it's not over because B-Army is going to make sure that the 1.5 million people that are in conservatorships are also free. And we're going to amplify the voices of all of the other people who have been exploited and abused in this system."
