Women on the streets of Iran - 5th October 2022
People are protesting in the streets of Iran. The protests began after the death of a 22 year old woman. Mahsa Amini was stopped by police for not wearing her headscarf properly.
Amini was in a coma for three days before she died. Protestors say this was because police hit her on the head. The police say that this didn't happen.
Protests began in the capital, Tehran. They have now spread to cities across Iran. The protesters are women, who are burning their headscarves and cutting off their own hair. These are symbols of Iran's strict laws on clothing. Men are also joining the protests, which are the biggest in three years.
Women are showing their support around the world. They're removing headscarves and cutting their hair on social media, and at their own protests.
Iranian police are using violence to stop the protests. The government's put limits on the internet to stop sharing of images and information. Its leaders want tough action against the protestors. One religious leader, Grand Ayatollah Noori-Hamedani, has asked for a peaceful response.
Amnesty International has reported hundreds of arrests and over 100 deaths.
