An extraordinary life - 17th January 2022

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a famous South African. He died on 26th December 2021.

Archbishop Tutu was 90 years old. People all over the world sent messages. The Nelson Mandela Foundation said he was "extraordinary".

Desmond Tutu was born in 1931. He became a teacher like his father. Then, the government made new rules. Black and white students couldn't study in the same school. Tutu left his job and became a priest.

South Africa became an 'apartheid' system. Black and white people couldn't live, work or study together. Tutu wanted Black people to be free.

Tutu helped to end this racist system. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He became Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. But his work was dangerous. He nearly went to prison.

Tutu wanted a peaceful South Africa. He worked to make it a place for everyone. He called this a "rainbow nation".
