Banana from Ethiopia brings hope - 14th Feb 2022

Scientists are excited about a type of food from Ethiopia. The food’s called 'enset'.

The enset tree looks like a banana tree. But you can't eat the fruit. People eat other parts of the tree.

People in Ethiopia eat enset. It’s everyday food for about 20 million people in Ethiopia. Local people use it in bread and porridge.

People are worried about climate change. Climate change will be bad for important foods like wheat and rice.

Scientists are looking for new plants. They did some research about enset. They think the plant can help.

Enset is easy to grow. You can pick it at any time. And scientists think it could grow in many other places. It could be food for 100 million people in other countries, like Kenya and Uganda.

Enset may be one answer to some big food problems on Earth.
