Do spiders dream⁇ - 26th September 2022
Do spiders have dreams? Dr Rossler, from the University of Konstanz, studies young jumping spiders. She says that these spiders have REM sleep. REM is Rapid Eye Movement. In REM sleep, we dream and our eyes move.
Dr Rossler watched young jumping spiders sleep. She says that their eyes move every 20 minutes. Their legs move too. Dogs and other animals do the same in their sleep. This means the spiders might be dreaming.
Scientists aren't sure why humans and animals have REM sleep. But Dr Rossler thinks spiders have bad dreams, like us. Sometimes they wake up suddenly and stretch their legs.
Scientists need more information about spiders' sleep life. But spiders are very small. It's difficult to look at their brains. Scientists think that with more information, we'll be less scared of spiders. Dr Rossler says it's hard to kill a dreaming spider.
