The sound of silence in the city - 18th September 2020

This scientist is stopping sound. This new technology makes windows quiet. It is good for people in big cities.

It is similar to some headphones. There are 24 speakers around the window. Sound from outside can’t enter the room.

The speakers make a special sound. This stops 10 decibels of the sound from outside. But air and light can come in.

We can’t stop all sound, says Professor Gan Woon Seng.

Professor: "OK, also, with the cacophonies of all this urban noise, we are not going to cancel all sorts of noise. Instead, we have a targeted approach. We are basically going after the low frequency noise coming from the traffic and the train noise."

The World Health Organisation says too much sound is bad. Heart problems have links to sound. It is bad for hearing problems too. These special windows could be good for people’s health.
